The Institute of Media, Journalism and Social Communication at the University of Gdańsk is the Host of IALJS-17

The Institute of Media, Journalism and Social Communication at the University of Gdańsk will host this year’s IALJS-17 in May. It is one of the 6 institutes that make up the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Institute of Media, Journalism and Social Communication stands out from the rest with its hands-on approach to research and teaching. The academic and teaching staff consists largely of scholars who are either practicing or former journalists. Studies in the field of Journalism and Social Communication have a practical profile, thanks to which the education of students includes practical subjects ensuring comprehensive preparation for the profession. Students of journalism and social communication can complete their internal internships in a professional photo studio, as well as a modern laboratory for the simulation of television recordings and film documentation or learn the secrets of a radio journalist’s work at radio studio. All these places are based at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The institute is located at the University of Gdańsk, which is a public research university in Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland. The University of Gdańsk was established in 1970 by a merger of the Higher School of Economics in Sopot (in existence since 1945) and Gdańsk College of Education (formed in 1946). It is the biggest University in Pomeranian area of Poland and is also part of European Universities of the Seas (SEA-EU). It is an alliance of 9 universities whose main vision is to establish a distinctly international, pluri-ethnic, multilingual and interdisciplinary European University. The premise of the project is that all allied Universities live sustainably by, from and with the sea. University of Gdańsk is also an important centre for the studies of the Kashubian language.
